Our Objective

The Oxford Sanskrit Text Society

For a deeper understanding of the Indic world, specifically pre-modern history, language, culture and society of India, it is necessary to read Sanskrit texts anew. For this purpose, it is desired that as many Sanskrit texts as possible are published in one series together with scholarly translations for the use of scholars, students, as well as informed non-specialists. The STS wants to take up this challenge and publish Sanskrit texts of all genres with a translation, either the original and translation together or in separate volumes depending on the size and importance of each text. This series will be thematically divided into sections and sub-sections, or in accordance with their traditional association, such as Vedic, Shaiva, Vaishnava, Bauddha, and Jain canonical texts. Some important Sanskrit texts will also be published with their classical Tibetan and Chinese translations.

The STS works in close collaboration, first and foremost, with the Bodleian Library and the Faculty of Oriental Studies, and with other departments and colleges of the University of Oxford concerned with the study of early Indian languages and the cultural heritage of classical India. The STS also works together with any other like-minded institutions and individuals in the UK, Asia, and elsewhere.
